Craigs List Scam
I am trying to sell some furnitiure on Craigs List. I listed the items on Monday. yesterday I got a response from an interested party. His first response sounded legit. He just wanted to know if it was still for sale. Last night he sent another e-mail this one a bit more suspicious. I had some free time so I composed an answer. I don’t think he will respond but if he does I will let you know.

My Response
Your offer of an additional $200 is very generous. However, if you cannot pay cash I will have to raise the price to $2,500. The following is an itemized breakdown of the charges:
$650 Furniture
$200 Additonal- you offered so I will gladly accept
$750 Fuel/Transportation Charge- the closest Office Depot is 7.5 miles away, 15 miles roundtrip. I estimate that the fuel charge and wear and tear on the car would work out to $50 per mile.
$400 Meals- driving makes me hungry and I will need to eat after driving to Office Depot
$250 Snacks- driving makes me thirsty and it is hot out so I will need to stop in to a 7-11 and grab a Slurpee and some Corn Nuts
$250 Incidental Fees- my wife doesn’t understand business like we do and it will be very hard to explain this business transaction to her. It is easier to give her $250 and tell her to shut up and go shopping. $250 should be enough to buy her silence.
Please let me know if these terms are acceptable.

We just got the same e-mail from the same person, Michael Smith. I too thought that it was a scam, but now I’m convinced of it. (Although I have to admit, I was almost persuaded to turn over my $51.97 by his near-flawless mastery of the English language). I sent a reply to him, although mine wasn’t nearly as clever as yours. At any rate, I also will post again to let you know whether I get a reply to my response.

I just received an e-mail so almost exact to this one tonight. Only the name was different, but the wroding almost exact. Regarding the sale of my Wedding Gown. I said sorry I could not receive such payment as I have no printer.

Apparently Michael Smith works with Ralph Wilde because we have been negotiating with us to run the same scam for some furniture on CraigsList… we have requested the “check” to be sent, but he continues to ask for more and more info. So I have been playing it straight to get some more insight into the scam.
The next step seems to involve sending you extra money to pay the shipper when they come to pickup the merchandise.

This almost sound legitimate. Versa check is a real service and I have used it on occassion. Paypal is easier. But this nags at the back of mind if its legimate offer or not. Shipping business is what gets you. Any shipping company gets paid upon delivery!! Not before hand.

I (today) confirmed this was a scam. I too was almost a victim of the Michael McKay rent scam. He even sent me a “photo” of his daughter! Bastard! Got my hopes up and wasted my time. I’m glad I google everything.

I have a friend who works for the Sterling Va. Police Department, he lives only 15-20 miles from Reston. I’ll contact/ send him the pendent, and he can stop by and collect the cash in person.

Was happy to see someone response to my listing for room to rent. Didn’t know Mr. Michael McKay. Now i do I work hard for my money and this man seems to have found a way around the word “earning a honest living. I almost fell into the trap of renting a room to the 21 year old daughter but didn’t feel comfortable with a 4 month fee paid in advance and printing my own check. I google the name and damn if this person hasn’t screwed other people. Maybe the government should ship his/her sorry ass to the front lines. I found it amazing that his wording to myself and 3 other people was exactly the same. SHAME ON YOU MR MCKAY GET a real job and get a clue

The same Ralph Hinkson wants to buy my jet ski lift…same email wanting to send the extra $200. Says due to his current health conditions he can’t come look at it and can’t go to the mailbox to send check or moneyorder.
So I ask…if your health is that bad..and to make sure this isn’t a scam, how can you possibly use a jet ski or jet ski lift??? Will see what he replies, I already told him its a cashiers check or paypal or nothing and he replied insisting on iversacheck…..

Well, ‘Ol Ralph tried to hit me too. Sent me the suspicous email, so I responded after deleting all the info about what I was selling and asked “What are you looking to buy?”
I then got the same canned response. $200 more, My shipper, Versacheck and so on.
Look, if someone responds to your ad without mentioning the item, it’s a scam. Say Bye!

The only thing he want to do is to steal your indentity using all the information you will need to fill up on Freequickwire.com so you would be able to print the check.
ALSO do not download the program to print the check, it will steal all your private info.

Ralph Hinkson sent the same exact email to me. I was selling a machine for $2000 i purchased the ink and all and spent $50 then tried to cash the check and the bank could not locate the check. He was very pushy and rude and told me the check will clear just send the money. He kept telling me to send the money even if the check hasnt cleared because it will. Then a friend showed me this website.. im sure people have reported him but i would like to for my own case so if someone can give me some info on how to report him that would be much appreciated. I got this email and while the name is different, the tel # is the same as the post fro Indiana just two above. I wish I had more time and desire to actually play with these a$$ Holes. It could be fun. Somebody should turn the tables on them. I also got other emails that just wanted to purchase by cashiers check but had the same shipping company and grammar issues. If one of these guys used proper english - as it is taught here in the States (the others are really bad), perhaps they would seem less obvious at first.

Listed my spare room on Craig’s and got a response from Michael D. McKay, alhambra, CA wants the room for his daughter. I let him know about the seafety and security of the area and that his daughter could come interview. His next response was the offer to pay 4 months in advance with “versa” check…sound familiar? Second email was odd! The writer sounded much less educated than the first responder. the English was very broken. again, I stated that the daughter MUST interview for the room. Odd…no new response! Things that make you say hmmmm….

I too got an email from ‘Royal Camero’. I knew immediately that this was a scam just from his name. He then went on to look even more intelligent by asking if my item was still available (would I leave it up if it wasn’t??) and how much it was. My craigslist posting said the price! Do people seriously fall for this crap? My email exactly matches the person named ‘more of the same here’.

Royal Camero *(see Amalia Feb. 8th) tried this on my older son today. I found this scam link by accident, Thank God! Once we knew it was a scam I did a bit more research on it and found this: “SCAM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!… Do not do it. The check will go in and they will want their “extra” money back immediately in cash and the check will bounce. Absolutely, under no circumstances, do this. If you want to call their bluff, tell them to wire the money to your acct and deduct the cost of the wire from the selling price he offered of $2700…I bet you will never hear from him again.

I sent the following message to MSN as a general comment since they do not appear to have an option for reporting scammers hiding behind a hotmail address. We didn’t take long to figure out this person is a scam artist! We never give out a mailing address other than the post office box.
Always do a search of the address - how stupid can these people be to keep asking for information that has already been answered - how much, what is the total, etc.?

Well, I got the same bogus email from Michael McKay. Saying his daughter urgently needed the room etc. He was willing to pay for 3 months in advance and wanted to know how much the charges would be. I told him I would be happy to accept an application and would want to interview his daughter in person. Then he sent me a stock photo of some chick who looks like she just got out of rehab. I don’t think so… so glad I googled this jerk! What a loser! He is as bad as the idiots who were offering to ship cars a few months ago. Do they really think we are that stupid? McKays newet trick is to say he will pay by company check. No doubt he will printing his own check for the transaction!

I had another the other day, which I immediately saw as a scam…the name Aurey Hepburn…Pretty original no? I laughed for 20 minutes on that on. At least I haven’t lost anything…I feel for those who have.

Has anyone gotten scammed by Monica Williams from Alaska. It’s really quite amusing since they didn’t know that Alaska was part of the United States AND when she said she was living with her uncle he turns out to be in Boston, MA.
Here’s something else - another clue, when she sent the payment which already we knew was bogus, it was from Boston, MA form a guy named Aaron and when I asked her to tell her uncle Alan thanks for sending the money so fast, she didn’t even correct me! LOL
She also used Ciara in one of her emails and I questioned her about that too.
Oh this girl thinks she’s clever but not good enough for me. I’ve got her IP address and people I THINK YOU NEED TO LOOK UP THE IPs OF ALL THE REPSONDERS. Do that under show full header in your email and do the reverse IP to find where they are.
Also, the scam is they sell something to someone else, those guys send you a “legit” check and then the other guy who paid for whatever merchandise they thought they were receiving, never arrives. That’s a double scam!
Scamming the buyer and scamming the seller.
Befriend a Private I or a police person and have them check out these ridiculous people!

So here I am looking at posted comments after just realizing that my ad must have attracted ID theft artists. At first it was a lady that suddenly varnished after providing my address to send the payments.
Then right after that was this guy, requesting an electronic check be purchased. Well, 1+1 makes 2, now the con artist wants my account info to finish the job. Dont fall in to that. Verify info from people online before making a move… wait… isnt that the same mistake I made? Report this cases, this is identity theft.

Grammar.
No one is perfect, I make mistakes too. Read most emails from the con artists. Yeah! It makes me ashamed but this are mistakes associated with guys from Nigeria. I am African too but I work my ass just as hard as hard as most of us do here - to see someone take advantage of that really pisses me off.

My first thought was, “what an ass!” Telling me to go to Kinkos, spend money, etc. But, I am a polite person, (for the most part, lol) so I responded in a polite manner, as follows:

I’m glad I have gotten smarter on checking things like this out. Have a guy named Don Ingram from Las Vegas, NV. incl. his address and ph. When I called, all circuits are busy. I did mapquest the address, which is legal, although when I checked on his name, there were two in Vegas, but not with address he gave. I had a antique cook stove for sale on craigslist. His wording wasn’t exactly like the the ones here, but close enough and wanted to pay by iversacheck. Definitely-seller beware. What a shame, that there are people that do these kind of things.

A Paul Robinson emailed twice asking me to end my craigs list ad, buy a $10 Business check paper from Office Depot and he would walk me through the process. He never asked for photos of the item even though I wrote in the ad that there was damage. He wrote in capitals “PLEASE DO NOT REPLY ME IF YOU ARE NOT A SERIOUS SELLER OR ELSE I WILL RPORT YOU TO THE PROPER AUTHORITY”

Everybody who reads this should scan their computer for trojan horse proxies. I keep a close watch on my computer virus software and today after recieving a few e-mails from a David something-or-other regarding a drumset that I have for sale on craigslist.com I discovered several trojan horse programs on my computer that were caught early enough to avoid further corruption. It would be in your best interest to scan your own computers as well before any serious and expensive damage occurs.

I spent $300 dollars on supplies… i spent so many of my precious hours going to ups stores and drop boxes and getting airway bills, gluing ups labels on envelopes and writing checks that ended up being fake. it took me so much money and time to figure out that TERRY DICK is not gonna pay me back. This is a warning to anyone who may fall for this. He even sent me lists of names and bank info and it was so beleivable untill i realized he didnt want ups tracking me down. send it to a different drop box every time? why? he says just do it. I asked questions and they were not answered. First he asked if my item was still available, which I responded that it was. The next email from him was as follows:

Yes, I recieved an email from a mark jones…who also went under oldies2222@googlemail.com..his slip up is that he didn’t care anything about the condition of my old propane tank was…what kind of an idiot would say that…then proceeded to tell me to give him all of my info, and that I could go to www.freequickwire.com and print out his check..you betcha I came looking. Thanks for seeing this page.

I had some sterling silver flatware which I posted on Craigs List for $3000. Bottom line, someone said they’d buy it, send me a check for $5200, and I was to send him the overpayment of $2200. Check came today with return address belonging to a Tuan Nguyen. The company it was drawn on does exist, but they were not the folks who issued the check. Must have been stolen.
This is just another lame way of someone trying to get something for nothing from people who earned what they have through hard work.
I suppose there are people out there who fall for it, which is so sad, but the majority of us see right through it.
Hey, you stupid jerks!! You need to come up with a newer and better scam. This one is way too old to work!

I was suspicious, so I mailed him my phone number and name and said let’s talk.
He called!! Could barely make him out with a thick accent…sounded like a internet phone call from over seas. He wanted my address.
I sent him a note saying I needed to confirm his phone number and I would call him to do so. No reply yet.

My encounter is slightly different. I was contacted by “Bruce Moore” saying I was to print off checks for his company and needed to buy the paper and program and would be reimbursed afterwards. Sounds legit, until I read money through money gram. Would be paid 300 weekly…i don’t know.
